I booked my ticket for the David Bowie World Fan Convention a year ago, seduced by photos from the previous year’s programme which I had seen on Instagram.

Hundreds of Bowie fans from all over the world gathered to celebrate his legacy and to achieve that mystical one degree of separation from the legend they loved.

And they still love him, even though David (we were on first name terms by the end of the weekend) left the planet eight years ago.

Deciding what to wear for such an event was a conundrum.

If you’re familiar with my Rockstar Ending series hero, Bob, you’ll know how tricky it can be for a mere mortal of average looks and body shape to don Bowie’s mantle.

No. I wasn’t going there, opting merely for some silver jeans, and my lightning bolt jewellery.

I adored what the other fans did. A Bowie for every occasion.

You can see some of their incredible living tributes on my Instagram, along with a few other pictures related to another band from Liverpool you may have heard of.

The steam of Bowie experts, muses and collaborators shared anecdotes brimming with humour and admiration.

One of the Spiders from Mars, drummer Woody Woodmansey told us about how he was buttering toast with Mick Ronson in the kitchen while Bowie plonked Life on Mars on the piano next door.

“What’s he on about? ‘Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow’? Hmm, kind of works, though…”
